Sole Survivor
Location: Bridge Observation Lounge
Timeline: MD 03 - 0800
[Ready Room]
Daegan sat at his desk looking at the map on display. They would be operating in the beta quadrant and the map contained the the fringes of the Federation, Klingon space as well as few minor regional territories. He...no his crew basically had a blank slated on how they went about their explorations but they still had a job to do. Sure he could walk into the upcoming meeting with everything planned out with a hear is how we are going to do things but that wasn't how he wanted to do things. He needed to trust his crew and he needed to show trust in them as well.
With that decided he transferred the map to the holo-emitters in the conference lounge and cut through the observation area taking a seat while he waited on the others.
Sizia came in from the Ready Room, like he had, with a cup of coffee and a small plate of fruit for her Captain.
"What's this?"
"Just following orders sir."
Daegan smirked, "Who's orders?"
Sizia smiled knowing he already knew the answer.
"Well...thank you." Stabbing a piece of pineapple he chewed as he reviewed the padd in his hand.
"Good morning, Captain. Crewman Sh'velihr." Adana greeting as she moved to take a seat, careful to leave the chairs on either side of Bass empty as she was unsure which side the first officer preferred. She made a point to keep her expression neutral as she noticed the food and drink at the table. This was a conference room, not a mess hall, and she did not think it appropriate enjoy a meal at a staff meeting. Still, that was her own belief, and she reminded herself that one of the reasons she'd applied for transfer to Valkyrie was to observe other command styles. She sat her own padd on the table before her and folded her hands in her lap, offering her CO a polite smile.
Daegan returned her smile and greeting. Noticing her hair neatly locked away, "Hair firmly in place this morning I see."
Caught off guard, Adana tried but failed to suppress a grin. "You know it."
Daegan nodded with a grin at her off the cuff reply, glad to see she was relaxing a bit.
Jules and Ridge entered at the same time, laughing quietly, both with coffee mugs in hand and split just inside the door. Ridge, to the other end of the table where he sat in the seat opposite the captain, while Jules went to the left to circle behind her husband and drop into the seat on his right. She hid a laugh, seeing the fruit before him, and reached for a small pastry with a cheerful grin. Ridge, whose stomach tended to wake up considerably later than most, contented himself with his coffee and tried to remember how to formulate coherent sentences.
Stabbing another piece he made small show of taking another bite.
Lieutenant O'Riley had been in engineering all morning catching up on a few things until it was time for the senior officer's meeting. Walking into the conference room Liam greeted the room "Good morning everyone" he commented with a smile looking for a seat. Seeing an empty seat he sat next to a young black women "Lieutenant, I don't believe we've met; I'm Lieutenant Liam O'Riley, chief engineer" as he gave a smile.
"Adana Ramsey, operations" she greeted, returning the smile. "Pleased to make your acquaintance."
"You as well. If you ever need anything from engineering, please don't hesitate to ask since our departments to overlap occasionally" he responded glad to be putting a face to a name.
M'Tala, better known as Hobbes, walked into the conference room. Having met he XO, but not the Captain he made sure to greet him specifically as he took an empty seat. "Morning Captain."
"Lieutenant. Do you prefer M'Tala or Hobbes?"
His ears perked at that but he shouldn't have been surprised, he was the Captain. "Hobbes, once you get a callsign it's strange to go by anything else."
"Hobbes it is then. You'll have to tell us sometime of how you get that name."
Hobbes smiled, "I'd be happy to."
Erin walked in drinking coffee and trying to read a padd and walking at the same time. She nearly walked into Dan who came in from the opposite sise.
"You are a dangerous woman," Dan said he steadied her coffee just in time. "You still need to make good impressions, Erin," he whispered as they sat doen.
Morloth followed soon behind Erin. He hummed a deep, jolly tune to himself. He occasionally sung a few words... First in Klingon, then in Orion. "Good morning, Captain.. Fellow officers." The large man with mottled green-brown skin nodded to each person curtly, offering eye contact with his wildly-colored irises.
"Hi Mr Sec Chief," Erin said to Morloth and indicated an open seat next to her and Dan, who also nodded to him. "if you can squeeze in here," Erin invited.
Daegan nodded to the hybrid as he took a seat. The jovial nature to the man was contagious and atypical to any Klingon or Orion that he had ever met.
Finally Urushi arrived looking a little tired with bags under her eyes. "Sorry," she apologised. "Rough night." She helped herself to a strong coffee.
Now that everyone had arrive Daegan scanned the assembled officers. "Good morning everyone. As you can see we have a few new faces with us." Gesturing to each in turn, "Allow me to introduce our new Chief of Operations Lieutenant Adana Ramsey and our Chief of Flight Operations Lieutenant M'Tala or Hobbes of the Clan Hrasi. If you haven't met them already be sure to do so.
"Additionally, Don't get used to a spread at every staff meeting..." he said smiling. "...But since this is our first official meeting I thought a little extra wouldn't hurt.
"Now as you you are all aware we have been given an exploratory mission but only the XO and I know exactly where we are headed." Tapping a button on the touch screen for his section of the table a holographic image of known space came to life above the table. Tapping the button again and the tree dimensional display flattened out to two dimension map with grid lines for the various sectors.
"As you can see on the right side of the map there is little known beyond the edge of Federation space. Our job is to push back the edge of the map." Tapping the button a third time a general flight path was displayed. "Once we depart the star base we will make a quick QSD jump to the edge of the Ul-Kimaari Expanse and then proceed, roughly, parallel to the Federation border as we push further and further out into the unknown and see what strange new worlds are out there."
Listening and watching intently to the Captain, O'Riley made a few notes on his padd as he thought "This is going to be quite the adventure" knowing he would make sure engineering would be ready for whatever the cosmos threw at them.
"I certainly hope so. However exploration can be a lot of nothing with a dash of discovery. To get ahead of any potential boredom Get with each of your departments, casually, about off duty interests. I want to keep everyone engaged. "That said, Lieutenant Hobbes."
His ears perked and shifted to the Captain. He hadn't expected to be singled out so quickly. "Yes Sir?"
"Will the shuttle bay accommodate another Volga class runabout?"
"We can make it work. But a Flyer has similar capabilities and would take up less space."
"This is true, but the Volga has a higher warp capability. With a second runabout we can rotate them to a position at the edge of the Valkyrie's sensor range not only to boost our capabilities but use it for away team training and to keep our pilots, junior staff and non-comms sharp."
"Understood."
"Good. Lieutenant Ramsey. Requisition a Volga class shuttle from the Star Base. I want it aboard as soon as possible."
"Understood," Adana acknowledged, turning to Hobbes and giving him a nod to indicate she would get him the best Volga they had to offer.
"Are you really saying that we are going where no man or us, have gone before? And that we are going there fast?" Erin asked excited about the prospect of experiencing the QSD drive for the first time and of course the unknown. That was why she joined Starfleet in the first place.
Chuckling at he excitement and the paraphrased oath. "Absolutely."
Stabbing a final piece of pineapple from his plate. "One last piece of business. I have yet to appoint a second officer. I have had one officer already express interest in the position, but to be fair I know nothing of your capabilities beyond your personnel file.
"After discussing it with Commander Maguire we have decided to allow those interested in that position to submit themselves for consideration. Those individuals will be evaluated in 2 ways. First, they will take command of Gamma shift. This will test not only command ability but endurance and overall management skills since you still have your Alpha shift duties. The second aspect is that you will take command of awayteams as the come up.
Those who want to be considered for the 2nd Officer's position submit your name to my Yeoman", gesturing to Sizia, "by the end of the day. Any questions?"
Popping the bite of fruit into his mouth he waited.
Urushi looked up at that. She took a long sip of her coffee as she gazed at the Captain with curious interest. Leon's previous host had been a Starfleet Captain before and now that knowledge had been shared with her. She felt a sudden urge to apply for the position and being a bridge officer gave her an advantage as well. She chose to remain quiet, but made a mental note to contact the Captain's Yeoman after the briefing.
Adana maintained her composure, but was thrilled at the announcement. She had already made the Captain aware of her intentions, but she appreciated the opportunity to prove herself to him and the XO, and hopefully, her new colleagues. While her record spoke for itself, these tests would allow her to be an active participant in the process and she was going to rise to the challenge.
Daegan scanned the assembly. "Alright, Mr. Hobbes, set a course for our IP. I want to be ready to go as soon as the runabout is aboard. if there is nothing else....Dismissed."
Grabbing his padd Lieutenant O'Riley started back to main engineering. His focus now would be concentrated on making sure all was ready for their departure from the station as they made their way into this unknown area of space.
Adana stood and walked directly to Sizia to submit herself for consideration as Second Officer. Then she headed towards Operation to see about acquiring the requested Volga in record time.
