Mission:
What was Lost is Found
Location: Planet Kril'es
Timeline: MD 6 - 1135
Administrator Kurul, the entire counsel, and hundreds of people, most of the settlement, had come out to see the arrival of the Federation shuttle.
The sleek shuttle that came into view was a greatly different from the box shaped shuttles he had seen when they first arrived here. He admitted that it was a vast aesthetic improvement and he was understandably curious as to the technological improvements that have come about in the last century.
As the shuttle landed a rear hatch opened and a ramp lowered. The first person to emerge was a large broad-shoulder male with long silver hair that had been tied back, followed by a dark skinned man with a close cut beard. More people emerged as the group grew in size as the all waited to approach until everyone had disembarked from shuttle.
A few words were spoken by the silver haired male, he seemed to be in command, and they began to approach.
Gesturing to his delegation, Kurul and the other counsel members moved to greet them.
Rogers kept back and slightly to the side of Daas, keeping a clear view of the newcomers and colonists. Not that he would say he didn't trust them but...his job wasn't to trust new people. Especially not where his senior staff was concerned. Peripherally he checked to make sure the security personnel were also taking up positions that would afford them opportunity to react quickly if something should happen. He was most curious about Renfroe as this would be the first time he worked with the combat medic and would be evaluating if there would be future operations involving him.
He trusted Baldwin and Kawolski to be assessing the rest of the area, giving updates as necessary. As previously reported, it seemed to be a mix of humans and Romulans. Hardly surprising considering what they discovered by their orbital scans. Even less surprising was how prejudices and common hatreds of a century previous were wiped out and the generations were becoming more homogenous. It would be interesting, however, to see how they merged technologically and sociologically.
One of those officers was a small petite woman, with beautiful brown eyes and lavender hair. What stood out the most were a spotted pattern that ran down each side of her face and her neck. Urushi looked around at the crowd, she hadn't expected such a turnout for their arrival. She was dressed in a uniform like the others, but with blue on her shoulders. Any of the colonists who knew their history would understand she was some sort of science officer.
No doubt sharing her sentiment was a tall, broad-shouldered man who stood just off to her left; the near-identical presence of spots on his face indicated that he was of the same species as the lavender-haired woman, and the doctor's bag he carried in his hand indicated he was of a of medical profession. Having traveled down to the surface expecting a rather small group of survivors, he was, evidently, quite surprised to find himself standing before a crowd of several hundred, and he realized all too quickly that his detachment was woefully under-prepared to be treating this many people at once.
Darius was impressed by the show of unity. These people had somehow learned to coexist. Not just coexist, but from what he could gather, a few obviously hybrid children and young adults he'd caught in is peripheral vision, they were thriving together.
That is what the optimist in him saw, the pessimist in him was wondering when things were going to go sideways.
Niami was the last to step out of the shuttle her dark ayes scanning those who had come to meet them. She noted the emotional level of those who had come. There was the essence of curiosity, welcome, hopefulness from the descendants. From the crew, some suspicions, watchfulness, along with curiosity.
Liam O'Riley stood surveying the inhabitants in total amazement. If these people could set aside centuries of hostilities and prejudices in order to survive, then maybe there was hope for the galaxy yet. Looking further, what little technology he could pick out from his surroundings, it appeared what they did have at their disposal was definitely centuries old; most of it was hardly recognizable as to it's function but still they had survived with what they had on hand.
Taking a good look around, Jason openly wondered how the settlement was able to function with the mix of technologies that seemed at best, haphazard. He would need to get data of a census, see how many people and what ages were about. It did strike him as odd that the two groups managed to work together so well, and how many of original crew of the Romulan ship might be around, since they lived longer.
With his best diplomatic smile Daegan led the way and as both groups drew closer. Extending his hand he gripped the Elder Romulans hand. "Administrator Kurul I assume."
"Yes, and you must be Captain Baas."
"That I am." Gesturing to those behind him. "My senior officers: Executive officer Commander Hunt, Strategic Operations Lieutenant Korveth, Security Chief Lieutenant Rogers, Chief of Operations Lieutenant Mallory, Chief Engineer Lieutenant O'Riley, Chief Science Officer Lieutenant Yaotome, and Chief Medical Officer Lieutenant Tanaka."
The Administrator nodded respectful at each in turn before making his own introductions. "Nice to meet you all. These are the members of our communities Ruling Council. Councilors Reynolds, Yuvana, Dureem, and Jennings."
Baas nodded to each in turn, "A pleasure to meet you all. I'm sure you all have just as many in not more questions that we do but before we get to that, is there anything you and your people need? We have teams standing by to render any assistance you might need."
"We've become very self sufficient over the years but any help you are able to provide...Medical assistance would be greatly appreciated. The impulse fusion reactors salvaged from the Ulysses are in bad shape as well."
Looking back to his people. "Let's get the Medical and Engineering teams down here. Mallory, have your team come down as well to do a general survey to identify any other needs."
"Aye, Sir, the broad-shouldered Lieutenant, Tanaka, nodded before motioning to his colleagues to begin setting up a preliminary triage.
"Already planning that out Captain." Jason commented in response. There was a lot of basic information they would need. "I'd recommend we check with science and engineering about setting up pattern and signal enhancers to cut through the atmosphere issues and make this more feasible for larger scale transport, than trying to rely on only shuttles."
Hearing the Captain's orders O'Riley tapped his comm "Lieutenant Sovak, please send maintenance Teams 1 & 2 to my location; it appears we have some work to do on some quite old tech" he ordered.
"As you wish Chief" Sovak replied "I will have them to you in ten minutes. Sovak out."
Kurul smiled appreciatively, "Thank you Captain. Let's move to the Council Hall to address all those questions you mentioned."
Gesturing for the Administrator to lead the way Daegan and the rest of the away team mixed with the various counselors as the moved into the settlement.
Rogers hung back as the main group began to move forward. Keeping his eye on the situation, he opened a private channel to the security personnel, including Hannah and Renfroe. "Keep your attention sharp and on the away team. We don't have a proper security review of this situation and so we're going in unknown." He took a beat here to try to keep his irritation out of his voice. "Stick with your groups and an eye on everything."
He then waited for the responses from team leads before he hurried to catch back up to where the captain was.
Commander Hunt looked around before moving forward. These folks had made quite the life for themselves here. He was sure that it was far from easy. But they made it work.
Darius was focused on the council members, not because he suspected anything suspicious, or out of place. He didn't. At least not in the moment. He just was intrigued by how they had come together and more importantly how they were interacting with each other now.
As they made their way through the settlement the construction materials changed. The outer most structures were mostly wood where as the inner structures were a combination of what looked like thermal concrete and sections from the both the Federation and Romulan starships. Upon entering the council hall everyone was seated around a large arched table.
"While all of us here certainly have a number of questions about what has happened since we disappeared, I think it would be easier to for us to go first and answer the questions you have for us. Unfortunately we have no idea how it happened, all we know for sure is that there was a battle...a large exchange of federation torpedoes and and an experimental weapon we were testing. There was a brilliant light and the next thing we knew we were swooping past the Ulysses and into this planet's atmosphere.
"After we crashed we prepared for an attack. We knew the Ulysses was still up there and we expected to be targeted from orbit. When that didn't happen we began to look to our survival. We used our ship as a shelter. Eventually we learned that the survivors from the Ulysses has set up camp and were flying shuttles back and forth as they brought down their own people and supplies. To make a long story short there was over 20 years of sporadic fighting between the two camps."
Daegan took advantage of his pause to interject. “What finally brought you all together?”
“Another crash.”
