Mission:
What was Lost is Found
Location: USS Valkyrie
Timeline: MD 6 - 1110
The Valkyrie dropped from warp and approached the ship that had drawn them here. The Ulysses had been parked at a LaGrange Point between the planet and it's moon. Both the saucer section, what was left of it, and the engineering hull had clear evidence of weapons fire from an old battle. No lights were visible, nothing flashed. Pieces of the hull had been removed from various areas, and in some places the space frame itself was visible.
Daegan looked at the relic and his head, "Looks like she went through one hell of a fight. But was it before or after they ended up here? Alright, full sensor sweeps, the system, the ship, and the planet's surface."
"Sensors aren't detecting other ships in the area," Rogers reported.
Niami shifted in her chair, gazing out towards the ship. It was sad to see something like that being there. Much like the first piece of a ship's graveyard.
Darius looked up from the console beneath him. As he began the ordered sensor sweep. "No life forms on the ship, not that, that is surprising after all these years. No other ships within sensor range, no threats in the area. I detect some primitive life forms, nothing sentient around that I can detect, but the atmosphere is interfering with the readings, so I can't say for sure."
"Hmmm... Any sign of remains aboard?"
"Nothing," Urushi replied as she watched the sensor data flooding into her screens. "If the crew were aboard when this happened, they aren't now; in any form."
Daegan nodded. "Hobbes take us into standard orbit. See if we can cut through some of that at interference."
Hobbes' hand were moving as the Valkyrie moved passed the the remains of the Ulysses. "Standard orbit. Aye sir."
At a rear station to the right of the Captain, Ryan Kellerman had been sifting through old Starfleet records to match with the mystery vessel. It had taken quite some time, and there were still records he was waiting on from Starfleet Command that was not contained in the Valkyrie's own database.
"Captain," he said, low and careful. "I've received detailed records of the Ulysses' crew as of stardate 7395. Captain's logs, personal logs, mission logs. It may come in handy if we need to identify any remains." He paused a moment, scrolling through the last logs on his console display. "I do have the final transmission made by the ship."
As the ship moved into orbit Daegan turned back to his intel chief. "Let's hear it."
Kellerman punched in a command, bringing an audio transmission that began with a burst of static--ragged, alive, the sound of circuitry dying. Then a voice broke through.
It was male, young maybe, but worn to the edge. He was shouting over the roar of something that sounded like a storm inside the ship.
"This is Ensign Farooqi--USS Ulysses, NCC-3196! We are--"
A deafening crash cut him off. The recording hiccuped, the background noise flaring and then falling away.
"--engaged near the Neutral Zone! Unknown Romulan vessel--cloak--heavy plasma fire--"
He coughed, and for a few seconds there was nothing but the ragged sound of his breath and a long, low groan of the hull.
"Bridge is disabled... captain and XO are--" another cough came, wet, "--Jennings has taken helm control. Trying to--draw them in."
Sparks snapped somewhere near the mic. Someone in the background screamed.
"If anyone gets this... tell Starfleet we--"
A rumble like thunder swallowed his words. The transmission stuttered again, and then for a brief moment, all that could be heard was the hum of power fading.
Ryan sighed. "That's it."
Listening to that recording, Niami's hand went to her chest, then up to her lips as the emotions poured from that person who made that heartfelt plea.
The memories of his symbiont told a different story, at the time Starfleet must have classified that information to preserve to peace. The lack of wreckage and the disappearance of the ship had made classifying the ship as missing all the easier.
"Well that explains the hull, but not how it got here. "Are sensors picking up anything on the surface?"
"Let me run some more detailed scans.. " Urushi said. Her eyes darted left and right as the data scrolled across the science teams. "Erm, Captain..." she looked back at him briefly before checking her readings again. "You're going to want to see this."
Daegan nodded. "On screen."
With a few taps she pulled up visual images on the main viewscreen. "There are several locations on the surface which were once craters. Sensors are showing evidence of anti-matter explosions, residual radiation and such..." Urushi explained. "Oh and then there's this..."
"Oh shit," Darius replied his skin darkening a shade, "Is that what I think it is?"
The image now showed what looked like a settlement. However less than a kilometers away was a crashed ship. It was heavily cannibalized and overgrown, but it's shape was obvious. An old Romulan D7 Warbird. "There's our warbird." She stated. "I'm also picking up Romulan and Human life signs in that settlement and what looks like Romulan/Human life signs combined."
She turned in her chair to face the bridge. "It would seem, we've discovered the descendants... of both ships crews."
Daegan grinned as his head shook slightly. "Amazing. It would appear that they had put the old animosities aside faster than we have. Well let's see if anyone's listening. Open a channel using frequencies from the last century."
While listening, Jason had been researching the old frequencies used by both the federation and Romulans at the time from the Ulysses went missing. When Daegan ordered the channel, Jason already had it loaded and ready. "Broadcasting on the known frequencies for both. Channel open, you're on Captain."
"Greetings. This is Captain Daegan Baas of the Federation starship USS Valkyrie. Please respond." The hail was meet with silence and he repeated, "I say again this is the Federation starship USS Valkyrie. Is anyone receiving this transmission?"
Niami was on the edge of her seat waiting listening, hoping that there would be an answer.
[On the Surface]
Monitoring of the communications array had become a torturous duty. Hours of boredom where most napped, worked on personal projects, or hobbies. Nicole and her sister Jayna were out on the porch cleaning the vegetables and meat for the family's evening meal when Jayna screamed in surprise, nearly cutting herself.
Her hand went to her ear so quickly she knocked the earpiece loose and she scrabbled after it. By the time she has placed it back in her ear the message was repeating. =^= I say again this is the Federation starship USS Valkyrie. Is anyone receiving this transmission? =^=
Pointing to her sister, "Get the Council!"
Jayna scrambled into the cabin as her sister took off running towards the Council building.
=^= This is the...=^=
"Hello! Hello..."
[USS Valkyrie]
Daegan was cut off by an excited woman's voice. "...is there really someone up there?!"
Smiling as he glanced around the bridge. "There most certainly is. Who am I speaking with?"
=^= My name is Jayna. Oh my God...my grandparent's told us so many stories...they...we've hoped for so long... =^=
Everyone on the bridge could her her voice break.
[Council Chambers]
"Now for the next..."
The door burst open and Nicole was panting. "The...communi...". She dropped to one knee.
Once of the councilwomen rushed to her side. "Easy now, catch your breath."
The council had risen and was moving towards her and Administrator Kurul knelt beside her. "What is it child?"
Her chest still heaving. "We...were...hailed."
Kurul and most of the Council stared at each other for a moment before running to the communications building.
[USS Valkyrie]
Daegan had come to his feet trying to calm the woman on the surface. "Easy...easy. We're here now and we're here to help. We detected the ship between the planet and the moon..."
[Surface]
Jayna was wiping tears from her eyes as the voice continued. "...and we altered course. Is there anyone there that can explain what happened?"
Jayna was about to reply when the Administrator and several members of the council arrived.
Administrator Kurul toggled the switch on the old console and spoke. "I am Administrator Kurul to whom am I speaking with"
=^= My name is Daegan Bass, Captain of the Federation starship USS Valkyrie. With your permission Administrator, I would like to beam down with my staff. We have some questions about how you ended up out here and I'm sure you have a few questions yourself. =^=
"That we do. We await your arrival."
[USS Valkyrie]
"We'll be down shortly. Valkyrie out."
As the channel closed Daegan turned looking to Urushi. "Will we have any trouble with the transporters?"
"I wouldn't recommend it." Urushi stated. "There's a good amount of anti-matter radiation still in the atmosphere. The levels aren't dangerous to life, however it could interfere with transporter beams." She explained. "A shuttle would be safer until I can determine if we can transport safely."
"Sounds good." Tapping his combadge, "Senior Officers report to the shuttle bay, have each of your departments team ready as discussed. Baas out."
Rogers looked around the Bridge, since most of the senior officers were already there. He simply vocally acknowledged the Captain's transmission while tapping out orders of his own, assembling the teams that would go down to the planet with them. He planned for at least two security details - one led by him and to maintain protection of the Captain primarily. A beta team to guard over any breakaway group. As an afterthought, he also sent a message to PO1 Renfroe, activating him to join the security team. He hoped he had the man's file correct and he could act as both a security officer and an emergency medic. If not on this trip, and he didn't prove to be completely useless, he'd have Hannah make sure to oversee his 'combat' side to bring him up to speed so that he could in the future.
Having done that, and relinquishing the bridge console to the backup officer, he made his way off the bridge and to security to change into the tactical uniform for the trip planetside.
Darius rose to his feet and tugged his uniform jacket down in one smooth motion. as he moved toward the turbolift doors. Standing the entrance for more people to make their way there.
From his station, Ryan let his gaze drift over to Darius who was making his way off the bridge. He knew StratOps could easily be included on just about any away mission--more than Intelligence, anyway. Either way, he felt his guard going up considering several of the crew were about to visit a colony of descendants whom the Federation had no contact with. This seemed like it could go sideways without the proper information.
Jason nodded to his relief as he stood up. "Captain, is this particularly wise to have all the senior staff go?" He wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't bring this up, after all, people are a resource.
"If this was any other circumstances I would agree. However this is a remarkably unique situation. Romulans and a Starfleet crew went from trying to kill each other to living together. We need to make a good impression and put our best foot forward. After introduction I intend to ask them what they need help with and then providing that help.
Although, Hobbes you have the bridge, Mr. Kellerman you remain as well, we don't want them to think we're trying to spy on them by bring an intelligence officer with."
The Caitian nodded with a glance to Mallory. Even though he wanted to join the away team he had been given command of the ship. "Aye sir."
Ryan had been prepared to accompany the Captain only moments before. "Understood, sir." He glanced back at the turbolift door--Darius was already gone. Ryan wondered what they might find down there.
Niami rose from her seat and headed to the shuttle bay, this was going to be an extraordinary event happening.
Liam signaled to a relief person for his station and followed the others to the shuttle bay; he needed to see that place for himself.
Urushi swung around in her chair and then hastily made her way over to the turbolift.
Daegan and the senior staff on the bridge all moved into the lift and he announced their destination. "Shuttle Bay".
As the lift closed Hobbes' relied arrive from the other side of the bridge and he moved to the Captain's chair lowering himself into it. "Nice..."
